Cleaning 101

A clean home is a happy home. It’s hard to relax or be productive when your home is cluttered and dirty. By organizing your household cleaning projects into daily, weekly/monthly and quarterly tasks, you can have a clean home all the time!

Clean Every Day

So this might not sound super fun but there are a few quick things you should do every day to keep your home neat and tidy. Simple things like making your bed, wiping counters and picking up toys don’t take a lot of time and help keep you from feeling overwhelmed by clutter. Here’s a great Daily Quick Cleaning Checklist from Real Simple. Try printing it out and checking it every day until your routine is ingrained.

Weekly and Monthly Tasks

These are the chores that need to be done frequently but not every day. They include mopping floors, cleaning toilets, dusting, etc. The best way to stay on top of these tasks is to designate one for each day of the week. For example, Wednesdays could be your bathroom cleaning day and Thursdays are for kitchen cleaning. You may also have chores that only need done once a month such as washing your sheets. Try to plan to do one of those each week as well. Here’s a handy weekly cleaning schedule from Better Homes and Gardens to get you started. Try it for a couple of weeks and then tweak it to fit your schedule!

Deep Cleaning

Plan a deep cleaning day every few months or so. Many people do this quarterly to coincide with the changing of the seasons. Use your deep cleaning day as a chance to tackle projects that make sense at that time of year. For example, you may want to power wash the front of your home or clear out your gutters in the spring. Winter is a good time to clean behind appliances since you won’t be doing a lot of outdoor work. No matter what time of year, however, you will want to use this as a chance to clear out clutter. Donate all old clothes, toys and other household items you haven’t used in the past year.

Staying on top of a cleaning schedule may seem daunting at first but it will quickly become routine. Make sure to involve the whole family to help spread out the work!
